Seven women Cabinet Ministers and Six women Assistant Ministers appointed

A coalition government from the Party of National Unity (PNU) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was finally created on the 13, April 2008 with the highest number ever of seven women as cabinet ministers and six women assistant ministers.

The government of national unity is led by the President Mwai Kibaki and the Prime Minister Raila Odinga and was formed after the disputed presidential ballot counting that sparked violence in Kenya which claimed more than a thousand lives, and displaced as many as 600,000 people.

Kenyans hope that Kibaki and Odinga will work in unity to address the social tensions that fuelled the violence. On a positive note, Kenya now has seven women in its cabinet, the highest number ever since independence.

The Ministers are as follows:

      2.    Mrs. Charity Ngilu, Kitui Central MP     Minister for Water and Irrigation

      5.    Ms Esther Murugi, Nyeri Town MP       Minister for Gender and Children’s Affairs

      6.    Ms Beth Mugo, Dagoretti MP                Minister for Public Health

      7.    Dr Hellen Sambili, Mogotio MP            Minister for Youth and Sports

 

        1.    Ms Wavinya Ndeti, Kathiani MP              Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports

        2.    Ms Lorna Laboso, Sotik MP                    Assistant Minister for Home Affairs

COMMUNIQUE FROM EASTERN AFRICAN SUB-REGIONAL WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE VOICE FOR PEACE IN KENYA

15th February 2008, in Nairobi, Kenya   

We, members of the regional women’s voices for peace initiative from Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda gathered here in Nairobi on the 15th February 2008 bring women’s voices and solidarity messages to the people of Kenya. We take cognizance of the exceptional suffering that has been meted out on the most vulnerable members of the population especially women and children. We know what war can do to a country and its people, and we urge Kenyans to stop the actions that will take the country down that road.

We thank Your Excellencies for the opportunity to address this forum. We make this presentation on behalf of Kenyan women who have been meeting in Nairobi over the last two weeks. Action Aid International, Vital Voices, UNIFEM, Nairobi Peace Initiative and Urgent Action Fund-Africa have facilitated the consultations.  A committee of 11 women present here, represents the larger group.
