A
coalition government from the Party of National Unity (PNU) and the Orange
Democratic Movement (ODM) was finally created on the 13, April 2008 with the
highest number ever of seven women as cabinet ministers and six women assistant
ministers.
The government of national
unity is led by the President Mwai Kibaki and the Prime Minister Raila Odinga
and was formed after the disputed presidential ballot counting that sparked
violence in Kenya
which claimed more than a thousand lives, and displaced as many as 600,000
people.
Kenyans
hope that Kibaki and Odinga will work in unity to address the social tensions
that fuelled the violence.
On a positive note, Kenya now has
seven women in its cabinet, the highest number ever since independence.
The Ministers
are as follows:
-
- 1. Ms Martha Karua, Gichugu
MP Minister
for Justice and Constitutional Affairs
2. Mrs. Charity Ngilu, Kitui

and Irrigation
3. Dr Sally Kosgei, Aldai MP Minister

15th February 2008, in Nairobi, Kenya
We, members of
the regional women’s voices for peace initiative from Burundi, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia,
Tanzania and Uganda gathered here in Nairobi
on the 15th February 2008 bring women’s voices and solidarity
messages to the people of Kenya.
We take cognizance of the exceptional suffering that has been meted out on the
most vulnerable members of the population especially women and children. We
know what war can do to a country and its people, and we urge Kenyans to stop
the actions that will take the country down that road. |
